After his retirement as Morlands' architect in 1977, Jack began painting again for his own pleasure, very much in the style of his previous work.  He was often consulted by writers researching Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and the nineteen-thirties art world.

He was a keen bee-keeper and was active in the local bee-keepers' associations and the Glastonbury Conservation Society.  Following the death of his wife Anne in 1996 he lived alone and enjoyed reasonably good health until three weeks before he died.
