AJH learnt from Sadie Martin that Naum Gabo had told her this was his favourite painting. Changed hands after the death of Leslie Martin.

Despite being retrospectively catalogued by AJH as 2/1939, it is signed, inscribed and dated 'ARTHUR JACKSON/'PAINTING 1937'/Not for sale/Lent by J.L. & S. MARTIN./8, The Park, Hull/England' (on the reverse) Sold at Sotheby's London, '20th Century British Art' sale, 13 July 2007, (Lot 44) for £36,000 including buyer's premium. Sold at Christie's London, 'Modern British and Irish Art', 27 June 2017 (Lot 250) for £32,500 including buyer's premium, under name 'Painting 1937'.

In 1937, Jack began studying architecture at Hull under Leslie Martin and no longer exhibited regularly although he continued to paint. The remaining pre-war pictures of which he kept a record are shown here and all were numbered as '1939'. All of those shown were owned by Sir Leslie and Lady Martin during their lifetimes.
